UNILAG Maritime Students Gain Hands-On Industry Experience with Nigerian Navy, Shell, and NPA

In a series of immersive fieldwork experiences, students of the Institute of Maritime Studies , University of Lagos (IMS-UNILAG) recently engaged with three major players in Nigeria’s maritime sector: the Nigerian Navy, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

The visits, designed to enhance practical knowledge, provided students in Hydrographic Surveying, Maritime Administration, and Logistics & Supply Chain Management with firsthand exposure to industry operations.

The fieldwork exercises underscored the commitment of IMS-UNILAG to experiential learning for its students and collaboration with industry. According to the Director of the Institute, Prof. Odukoya, “these engagements ensure our graduates are not just academically sound but are industry-ready”.


Navigating Hydrography with the Nigerian Navy
For three intensive days, Hydrographic Surveying students embarked on a specialized training programme aboard NNS LANA, the Nigerian Navy’s premier hydrographic survey vessel.

Under the guidance of Captain Giwa and his team, the students participated in: Seamanship and hydrographic survey techniques, Bathymetric data collection and hazard mapping at the NIWA Jetty, Marina, and Equipment deployment and navigation safety procedures.

The exercise, which is crucial for international hydrographic certification, allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world maritime safety operations.

In her remarks, Director of IMS-UNILAG, Prof. Abiodun Mary Odukoya, expressed gratitude to the Hydrographer of the Federation, Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode; Director, Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Office, Rear Admiral G. E. Kwetishe, and the entire crew of NNS LANA for their invaluable support toward making the trip a reality.

Logistics & Supply Chain Insights at Shell Nigeria

In a landmark visit, students of IMS-UNILAG became the first academic group to tour Shell Nigeria’s newly inaugurated corporate headquarters at Eko Atlantic City. The delegation was warmly received by the Managing Director of Shell Nigeria, Mr. Ronald Adams, who highlighted the growing demand for skilled professionals in offshore logistics. and potential collaborations with IMS-UNILAG

Prof. Odukoya recalled the long-standing partnership between Shell and UNILAG, particularly through the Geosciences Centre of Excellence and reiterated the readiness of IMS-UNILAG to foster industry-aligned training.

A session led by the Head of Logistics and Supply Chain, Mr. Tajudeen Adebayo, provided students with deep insights into Shell’s operations. It featured case studies and interactive discussions.

The visit concluded with a networking lunch hosted by Shell.



Deep Dive Port into Operations at NPA Terminals

The next stop was the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), where students explored terminal operations under the guidance of the Head of Public Affairs, Hajia Hadiza Abdullai and the Principal Manager, Monitoring and Regulatory Services, Mr. J. O. Adu.

The tour covered: port logistics and cargo handling, regulatory compliance and monitoring systems, and efficiency strategies in Nigeria’s maritime trade.
