The four-day Machine Learning and Deep Learning Masterclass Workshop organised by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) AFRETEC Network ended on a high note on Thursday, May 14, 2026, with participants showcasing innovative, real-time technological solutions to contemporary challenges.
Held at the UNILAG-NITHub, the intensive training programme brought together forty (40) undergraduates from nine (9) tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The participating institutions included the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Anchor University, Caleb University, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), EKO University of Medical and Health Sciences, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Trinity University, Maranatha University, and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).
The masterclass culminated in a group presentation session during which participants, working in eight groups of five members each, developed and presented practical Machine Learning solutions using TensorFlow and other Deep Learning tools.
Among the innovative projects presented were an image authentication and animation software designed to verify image sources and detect authenticity; a Global Food Security Predictor for assessing hunger severity using key indicators; and a predictive wellness system for real-time arrhythmia detection using wearable ECG data.
Other solutions showcased included a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based model for detecting Invasive Ductal Carcinoma from breast tissue samples; a waste classification model powered by datasets and CNN technology; an early academic performance prediction model; a diabetes prediction system based on existing medical records; and a facial access control system capable of detecting face masks.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, the Convener of the workshop, Dr. Babatunde Sawyerr, explained that the programme was designed to groom and equip the next generation of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning experts with the technical skills required to address societal and industrial challenges.
Participants, in separate goodwill messages, expressed appreciation to the UNILAG-AFRETEC Network for the valuable learning opportunity, the quality of the resource persons, and the conducive learning environment. They also pledged to apply the knowledge and practical experience gained during the workshop to future academic and professional pursuits as well as national development.
The Masterclass Workshop on Deep Learning and Machine Learning for selected undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related disciplines commenced on Monday, May 11, 2026.
