UNILAG WINS “AI SCHOOL OF THE YEAR” AWARD AT DSN 2019 AI BOOTCAMP

This year’s Data Science Nigeria (DSN) Boot camp was a remarkable one with over 230 participants drawn from several university campuses from Nigeria. The event had 26 international and 13 local experts on ground to tutor all the participants. The Convener of the event Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi (datasciencenigeria.org) explained that the boot-camp intends to raise Data Scientist with remarkable Artificial Intelligence skills from Nigeria University Campuses. The 6-days fully-residential Boot camp which is the 4th of its kind took place at the New Engineering Hall and the Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS) Laboratories, University of Lagos.

Data Science Nigeria has a vision to build a world-class Artificial Intelligence (AI) knowledge, research and innovation ecosystem that delivers high-impact transformational research, business use applications, AI-first start-ups, employability support and social good use cases. DSN is committed to raising one million AI talents in 10 years. Like previous events, this year’s event enjoyed the support of many organizations like Microsoft, Retina-AI, UNILAG CITS, Softcom, Terragon, AxaMansard, Facebook,  Bluechip Technologies, MainOne, Carbon, BigML and GRID3.

University of Lagos emerged as the AI School of the year by recording the highest no of students in the Kaggle competition from all Nigeria Universities represented. Team Unilag was represented by the following students:

The award sponsored by Terragon Group has the recipient (UNILAG) receiving one 1million Naira for purchase of book to set up an AI library to be situated at University of Lagos CITS.  The award was presented by the Chief Executive officer (CEO) of Terragon Group Mr. Elo Umeh at the grand-finale of the event on Saturday 23rd November, 2019.

A special Recognition award was as well presented to the Acting Director, Centre for Information Technology and Systems, UNILAG, Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa for his outstanding commitment to Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Community. Data Science Nigeria described him as the rallying point between the industry and the academic community. The Award was presented to him at the grand-finale of the event by Dr. Stephen odaibo, a Physician, Retina Specialist and the Founder of RETINA-AI Health.
