The first two teams, assessing Economics and Chemical Engineering, were received on Wednesday at the Senate House, Akoka. The Director of the Academic Planning Unit, Professor Olufunlayo Bammeke, ushered them into the Senate Chamber and formally introduced them to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Foluso Afolabi Lesi, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor was joined in receiving the teams by other members of the University Management, including Professor Olufemi Saibu, Director of the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit and the Registrar, Mrs. V. The Chemical Engineering accreditation team was led by Professor C. O. Okieimen of the University of Benin, while the Economics team was headed by Professor Anthony A. Akamobi of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

Speaking on the purpose of the exercise, the Administrative Secretary of the Economics Department and Director at the NUC, Dr Victoria Pillah, explained that the visit was not merely about determining the programmes’ accreditation status. Rather, it provided an opportunity to assess the departments’ capacity to deliver quality education and produce graduates who can compete favourably in their respective fields.

In his remarks, Professor Lesi welcomed the teams and expressed the University’s readiness to receive the accreditation panels, noting that UNILAG remained committed to maintaining high academic standards and positioning its programmes among the best in the country.

He observed that accreditation exercises also provided valuable opportunities for external assessment, enabling universities to identify areas requiring improvement and learn from the experiences and observations of their counterparts across the country.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor particularly welcomed the presence of experienced academics on the accreditation teams, expressing confidence that their assessments would be thorough, constructive and credible. He assured the teams that the University had made the necessary preparations for the exercise and expressed optimism that the quality of its academic programmes and facilities would meet their expectations.

On Thursday, November 5, the University received a third NUC accreditation team for the assessment of its undergraduate Biomedical Engineering programme. The team, led by Professor Ngozi Ihedionma of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), was received by Professor Afolabi-Lesi on the 10th floor of the Senate House.

Welcoming the team, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor reiterated the University’s readiness to host the accreditation exercise and reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining high academic standards. He expressed confidence that the assessment would provide useful insights for further strengthening the programme and assured the team of the University’s cooperation throughout the exercise.

The reception of the three teams reflects the University’s continued engagement with the NUC’s quality assurance process and its commitment to the periodic review and continuous improvement of its academic programmes.
