Ahead of its scheduled Conference and blood donation drive, executive members of the KB Club, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, in her office on Thursday, September 7, 2023.
Led by its President, Mr. Eze Esomchukwu Anthony, the students briefed Professor Ogunsola on current programmes and upcoming activities of the club including STACK Conference 2023.
The KB Club President explained that the Conference which would be a gathering of health professionals and students drawn from across the nation, would provide a platform for youth entrepreneurship development and discussions on the subject of transforming healthcare through financial technology.
According to him, the Conference will also feature an essay competition for students at the secondary and tertiary levels as well as awards of scholarship to students that have demonstrated academic excellence.
The Secretary of the club, Mr. Mustapha Madehin, in his address, noted that STACK Conference 2023 will highlight ways financial and technological advancements can improve healthcare, and create a connected, consistent, mobile, personal, and self-sustaining healthcare system.
While bemoaning the shortage of blood in most hospitals and its resultant effect, members of the KB Club disclosed plans to improve awareness and create a positive attitude towards voluntary blood donation though the “Your Power To Gift Life” initiative. Under the initiative, the group plans to collect 1000 pints of blood from voluntary donors.
Being the Club’s first official visit since the investiture of the Vice-Chancellor, the outing gave them an opportunity to congratulate their host who became the first female helmswoman since the establishment of the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor, in her response, commended members of the KB Club for their dedication and thoughtfulness to impact society. She reiterated her readiness to fully support the club.
She remarked that their activities are a further demonstration of the excellent spirit of UNILAG students, as shown by their ability to combine philanthropic social service and their medical education.
Thereafter, the KB Club executive members made a presentation of a gift to the Vice-Chancellor who doubles as the Patron of the Club.
The KB Club is a medical socio-philanthropic organisation of medical students of the College of Medicine, UNILAG. It was founded in 1969 by a group of medical students headed by Professor Oladapo Ashiru (OFR), one of the club’s Grand Patrons. The club operates on a tripod of philanthropy, academic excellence, and social empowerment.
