Excellent news as the Lagos African Cluster Centre (LACC) in the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Thursday, May 22, 2025, officially secured a seven-year grant extension from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) – German Research Foundation.
This prestigious grant extension, facilitated through the University of Bayreuth is geared towards developing ground-breaking research in African Studies. It will ensure that LACC, UNILAG now rebranded Africa Multiple Research Centre (AMRC) continues its excellent work in “Reconfiguring African Studies”, in collaboration with its partners: University of Bayreuth, Germany; Moi University, Kenya; Rhodes University, South Africa; and Joseph Ki-Zerbo University, Burkina Faso.

Reflecting on this remarkable achievement, the immediate past Director, IADS and current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. ‘Muyiwa Falaiye shared, “This grant ought to expire at the end of this year, 2025. However, UNILAG and the four partners applied for an extension of another seven years. It’s been a tough process…It took the four centres a whole year to craft a proposal of about two hundred and forty-seven (247) pages. It was no easy feat… We had competition from several universities in Germany, and we are happy that we have received the extension to continue with the project for another seven years.”
This renewed funding is a testament to the strength and significance of research at the University of Lagos. It will ensure the continued transformation of African Studies, providing critical resources for pioneering interdisciplinary research. With another seven years of academic excellence ahead, UNILAG stands at the forefront of re-defining African scholarship on a global scale.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of the University Management, Senate, Staff and students congratulates the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS) on this feat and wishes the Institute more successes in the future.
