The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS), University of Lagos, rolled out the red carpet for its PhD graduates with a special Pre-Convocation Hooding Ceremony held at the Sports Centre Pavilion on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

Welcoming the graduands, the Dean of SPGS, Professor Abraham Osinubi, expressed heartfelt gratitude and congratulated them on the successful completion of their doctoral journeys. He acknowledged the years of hard work and perseverance that culminated in the achievement, noting that intellectual rigour, personal sacrifice, resilience, and disciplined perseverance had paid off.
He reminded them that the PhD degree comes with a profound responsibility: to ask difficult questions, challenge assumptions, and lead with integrity. He charged them to be custodians of truth, accuracy, and ethical leadership, emphasising the importance of evidence-based leadership and moral clarity in an increasingly complex world.
Driving the message home, the Dean stressed that knowledge is not power until it is applied. He urged the graduands to ensure their scholarship addresses real-life challenges through purposeful and impactful research. Emphasising the collective nature of academic success, he noted that no scholar succeeds alone, acknowledging the University of Lagos for its investment in their growth. He therefore encouraged the graduates to give back by mentoring others, supporting research, and serving as proud ambassadors of their alma mater across the globe.
In his concluding charge, Professor Osinubi urged the graduands to think big, lead ethically, give generously, and serve selflessly without expectation of reward.
“The world needs your contribution, and history will judge what you do with this knowledge,” he said, in a reassuring tone.
