Twenty-three (23) students drawn from various academic programs of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have received the financial support of a non-governmental/ non-profit organisation, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation.
The financial aid recipients, selected via an impartial and transparent process, were unveiled during a brief ceremony held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at the Biodun Shobanjo Building, Department of Mass Communication, UNILAG.
The event was graced by the Chairman of the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation Board, Professor Tajudeen Yusuf; Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Musa Adebayo Obalola; Deputy Dean I of Students Affairs, Prof (Mrs) Blessing Anyikwa; Deputy Dean II of Students Affairs, Dr. Adesanmi Mogbademu; Principal Assistant Registrar of the Counseling Unit, Mrs. Janet Aregbesola; awardees; among others.
The ceremony’s host and Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Musa Obalola thanked the Foundation for the financial support, reiterating the University’s readiness to pursue and drive initiatives that would empower and assist its students. He also identified efforts by the University to create and nurture partnerships that alleviate the challenges being faced by students and their parents/guardians due to the country’s current economic realities.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Foundation’s Board who also doubles as an Imam at the institution, Professor Tajudeen Yusuf explained that the support was facilitated by the UNILAG Student Affairs Division. While highlighting the organization’s ongoing support for the University community, Professor Yusuff re-affirmed the Foundation’s dedication to positively impacting the welfare of students.
Similarly, Executive Director of the Foundation and alumnus of UNILAG, Prince Sulaiman Olagunju outlined the vision of the organization, and emphasized the critical role of giving back to communities, including universities.
According to him, the financial support of a total of Five Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N5,750,000), is a fulfillment of the Foundation’s plan of fostering sustainable development and helping individuals achieve their potential thereby contributing to a more prosperous future for all.
One of the awardees, Miss Faridah Oluwakemi Qowiyu who is a 500-Level student of the Faculty of Law offered heartfelt appreciation to the donors, on behalf of the beneficiaries. She described the financial support as an unforgettable kind contribution to their academic journey.
