The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Management on Monday, February 10, 2025, played host to the Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Abuja, Kristin Wæringsaasen.
Kristin Wæringsaasen was in UNILAG to get on-site information about the University’s Aquatic Animal and Environmental Health Management (AQUAHEM) Project which is under the auspices of the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED).


The Norwegian diplomat was received by Principal Officers of the University including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Professor Bolanle Oboh who represented the Vice-Chancellor; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Lucina Obinna Chukwu; Registrar, Mrs. V. Abosede Wickliffe; Bursar, Mrs. Olufunmilola Adekunle; the University Librarian, Professor Yetunde Zaid; and Director, Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit, Professor Olufemi Saibu.


Thereafter, she was accorded a guided tour of the AQUAHEM Bacteriological and Molecular Laboratory at the Faculty of Science by AQUAHEM-UNILAG Project members and Dean, Professor Olayinka Asekun.
AQUAHEM Project is one of several international collaborations in UNILAG targeted at building capacity in Disease Diagnosis, Fish and Environmental Health Management while also strengthening the capacity of partner institutions with a view to contributing to a regional initiative on Aquatic and Environmental Health research and education in West Africa.


The project aims to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of fish diseases, diagnosis, fish and environmental health management, support infrastructure development for fish food safety, fish and aquatic health management as well as foster networking and collaboration among partners.
Other collaborators on the project include the Norwegian University of Life Sciences; University of Ghana, Legon, Accra (UG); Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and University of Development Studies, Ghana.
The Lead Principal Investigator of AQUAHEM-UNILAG Project is Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu, and other investigators on the project include Dr Minasu Pentho Kuton, Dr Amii Amaechi-Obiakara as well as Ecosystem Health and Pollution Management Research Cluster of the Department of Marine Sciences, UNILAG.
