January 2025 ended on a high note for students of the Department of Marine Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), with One Hundred and Eight (108) of them participating in the Department’s Annual Ghana Trip from Sunday, January 26 to Friday, January 31, 2025.

The Annual Ghana Trip is an International and Educational Coastal Road Trip designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Marine Science, to blend their class room knowledge with firsthand experience from reputable institutions beyond the shores of Nigeria.

The coastal road trip saw participants alongside some faculty members, traveling through the Badagry corridor to the Republic of Benin and Togo before arriving the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

Places visited during the 5-day field trip included the Regional Maritime University (RMU); Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD); Fisheries Commission, Accra; Tema Divisions and Koffi Annan International Peace Keeping and Training Center (KAIPTC).

Other places toured were: Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon; Ghana Ports and Harbour; Tema Fish market; Next-Door Rocky Beach and the popular Mokola market among other exciting places. Participants were warmly received, and treated to talks and lectures by renowned experts and academia at the different institutions visited.

Highpoint of the entire exercise was a cruise aboard a fishing trawler facilitated by Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA).

They were also treated to various Ghanaian delicacies such as mmore koko, wheat porridge, tom brown millet, oats, Ghana white jollof, fried and waakye rice, banku and okro soup, fufu and light soup, dokunu and kenkey.
