As the popular saying goes, “She believed she could, so she did”, this is the story of Okonji Bridget Obiageli, a 77-year-old woman who stole the show at the Unilag 50th (2018) Convocation Day One Ceremonies. Popularly called “grandma” by her classmates, short word for grandmother, Madam Bridget, wowed the audience by defying the myth that learning is for the young.
She bagged a Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) from the Department of Educational Foundation (former Guidance and Counselling Department), Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, under a Sandwich programme. Achieving this feat at the age of 77 earned her major accolades by all and sundry.
In an interview with reporters, she disclosed that she enrolled in the Sandwich programme to ward off boredom and gain additional knowledge. She stated that she is a retired officer who had worked in several countries across the globe before retiring in Nigeria.
Her story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone present at the Unilag 50th (2018) Convocation Day One and hopefully all those reading it, that it is never too late to dream or achieve greatness.
The entire University of Lagos community wishes Madam Okonji Bridget Obiageli and all graduating students of the 2017/2018 academic session, the very best in their future endeavours.
