Health Advisory: Be Vigilant and Prevent Spread of Cholera

Members of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) community are hereby enjoined to maintain high personal hygiene practices and frequent washing of hands, following reports of increased cases of severe gastroenteritis in Lagos State in the last couple of days.

This advisory comes on the heels of the notice recently issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Health, calling for heightened vigilance and adoption of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of a potential cholera outbreak in the State.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium vibrio cholerae. It can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea and the severe forms of the disease can kill within hours if left untreated.

Cholera can be treated successfully through prompt administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS). The WHO/UNICEF ORS standard sachet is dissolved in 1 litre of clean water. Adult patients may require up to 6 liters of ORS to treat moderate dehydration on the first day.

However, prevention is always better than cure. We, therefore, enjoin you to please play your part in preventing the spread of cholera by keeping a clean environment and ensuring you consume clean & safe drinking water and food. Your wellbeing is important to us.
