Professor Bosede Afolabi to speak at 2023 GoalKeepers Event

Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Bosede Afolabi is billed to speak at the 2023 Goalkeepers event scheduled to hold during the 78th United Nations General Assembly on September 20, 2023. The event will feature discussions centred around the world as it is today, the slow, and sometimes backward, progress made thus far towards the Global Goals and creating imaginations of a world with a more hopeful vision for the future.

It will be recalled that Professor Bosede Afolabi won a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant in 2020 for her project, titled, ‘’Intravenous Versus Oral Iron for Iron Deficiency Anaemia in Pregnant Nigerian Women {IVON)”. The project was estimated to run for 3 years (November 1, 2020 – October 31, 2023).

During her project, Prof. Afolabi worked on bringing a new intervention to Nigeria – a one-time, 15-minute intravenous (IV) infusion of iron which can replenish women’s iron reserves during pregnancy – or even after pregnancy – as well as help treat severe cases of anaemia quickly and effectively.

The Goalkeepers event is an annual celebration of progress that gathers world leaders, creatives, decision-makers, activists, and celebrities together. Goalkeepers is a registered trademark of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Goalkeepers initiative, led by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is designed to inspire and incentivize thinkers and doers toward achieving the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Driven by ground-breaking data and human stories, Goalkeepers publishes an annual report alongside hosting an event, facilitating a yearly awards program, launching a set of innovative partnerships called “Accelerators”, and convening a global community of collaborative and diverse changemakers who believe that progress is possible, but not inevitable.
