UNILAG VC Lauds NAPharm’s Verve for Synergising Healthcare Professions

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, has lauded the drive of the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy (NAPharm) to facilitate discussions on reviving a synergy among all healthcare professions in the country. She gave this impression during a courtesy call from executives of the Academy on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

Led by the National President, NAPharm, Prince Julius Adeluyi-Adelusi, executives of the academy visited Professor Ogunsola, ahead of the academy’s upcoming Investiture and Lecture, to extend a personal invitation to the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG.

According to Prince Adeluyi-Adelusi, who is also a former Minister of Health in Nigeria, the Lecture titled: “The Nigerian Economy and Pharmaceutical Ecosystem”, slated for Thursday, September 7, 2023, will address issues on the cost of medicine and healthcare services in the nation.

Speaking further on the academy’s mandate, since its establishment in 2014, to provide thought leadership in pharmacy, he disclosed that the academy has a keen interest in facilitating conversations around bridging the synergistic gap between different professions in the healthcare sector.

On behalf of the executives and members of NAPharm, Prince Julius Adeluyi-Adelusi heartily congratulated Professor Ogunsola on her unprecedented assumption of duty as the 1st female Vice-Chancellor of the great citadel of learning, University of Lagos. He expressed the academy’s pride in being associated with UNILAG and described Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola as a fit-for-purpose Vice-Chancellor. This inference, he disclosed, was drawn from his personal knowledge of Professor Ogunsola and the interactions of other NAPharm executives with her on different occasions.

He appreciated the University of Lagos for the recognition and space it has given the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy over the years and averred that members would be highly honoured if the Vice-Chancellor could grace the occasion with her esteemed presence as this would be the first time the Academy would hold its Ceremony for Investiture of Fellows and Lecture in UNILAG.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, welcomed the guests with warm and open hands. She affirmed that solutions cannot be found in one profession and pointed out the need for education to revisit the practice of olden times when all healthcare students received lectures together till a notable point in their education when they then focused on specialisation in different fields.

According to Professor Ogunsola, this would foster friendships and team building among the students and greatly reduce the dichotomy that currently exists between the different healthcare professions. She further proffered that such a deep-rooted establishment of synergy will equip professionals to work together seamlessly and compete excellently on the global stage.

Revisiting one of the precepts of her vision for a future-ready university, which she has advocated since her assumption of Office as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, she professed her hope for a future where there will be collaborations among the different professional academies, both in the sciences and humanities, to write position papers from their immense wealth of knowledge that will lead the nation and the world aright in academia.

Professor Ogunsola posited that so much growth and development is possible in Nigeria and thus called for the decolonisation of minds and ways, for citizens to see the value in originality as Nigerians.

She expressed gratitude to the NAPharm executives for their felicitations and kind wishes for the success of her tenure and assured that she will be present at the Academy’s Lecture and Investiture Ceremony.
