Association of Enterprise Risk Management Professionals (AERMP) seeks collaboration with the UNILAG

The Association of Enterprise Risk Management Professionals (AERMP) is set to partner with the University of Lagos for the creation of a Risk Laboratory which will offer practical training through demonstrations and experience-sharing by professionals drawn from the Risk Management Industry.

The Director-General/CEO, AERMP, Prof. Olayinka Odutola stated this on Friday, October 21, 2022 when the Association paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS.

The Team was received by the Vice-Chancellor along with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Lucian Chukwu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, Bursar, Dr. Lekan Lawal; as well as the Directors of Academic Planning, Prof. Mopelola Olusakin and Quality Assurance & SERVICOM, Prof. Grace Otinwa, Dean, Faculty of Management Services, Prof. Emmanuel Oyatoye and Head, Department of Actuarial Science and Insurance, Prof. Hamadu Dallah.

Prof. Odutola, also suggested an introduction of first- and second-degree programmes in Enterprise Risk Management at the Faculty of Management Sciences, with inputs from the industry.

While receiving the Team, the Vice-Chancellor welcomed the Team and noted the need of the scope of Insurance to be widened to properly absorb risk management. He also stated that the University is ready to collaborate with the Association and suggested that a collaboration be worked out along the lines of:

  • creating case studies at the postgraduate level which can be used by undergraduates,
  • creating programmes in conjunction with the UNILAG Business school for SMEs outside the university and
  • creating a customised programme along the lines of family business risk. This would be for family businesses which lasted a long time in their respective industries. This could be tailored to the reflect the peculiarities of families, taking into consideration religion, culture, tribe, etc.

In her remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Atsenuwa, applauded the Risk Lab initiative, stating that the University is interested in partnering with the Association as well as running short courses in risk management. She mentioned that the University is in need for a Risk Management Unit in the University, for the bursary and legal unit. Hence, open discussions would be held in due course between the University and the Association, around the kinds of structure which will work well with the University.

Also, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Lucian Chukwu, affirmed that the University of Lagos Business School (ULBS) would be interested in running a specially packaged Executive programme in risk management. He noted that it would be a lot easier for the University to introduce a Risk Management programme at the Master’s level – Professional Master or Postgraduate Degree in Enterprise Risk Management.
