Authorities of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday, November 19, 2024, hosted Samuel Eyitayo of the United States (US) Consulate, Lagos and Liza Steger of the US Embassy, Ghana
They were in the University to follow-up on plans by the US Consulate, Lagos to site a Window on America spot within UNILAG. The Window on America project in UNILAG was announced on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, during an interactive forum organised by the U. S. Consulate General, Lagos in collaboration with the University (For more on the forum, please click https://unilag.edu.ng/?p=35263).
Upon arrival at the University, the duo paid a courtesy visit to the 11th Floor Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS. They were received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayo Atsenuwa; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Lucian O. Chukwu, Director of Research Management Office (RMO), Professor Solomon Okunuga; Dr T. O.G. Egwuata and Dr. Olabisi Sulu-Olumide.
In his remarks, Sam Eyitayo stated that the Window on America project in UNILAG was on course. He explained that Liza Steger who is the Regional Public Engagement Specialist, was in Nigeria to physically review the project and ensure compliance to the best standard.
According to him, “we currently have twenty-five (25) American spaces in Nigeria and are hoping to have thirty (30) in twenty-four (24) cities by March 2025. We look forward to the space opening up here in UNILAG as it will offer several opportunities to the University”.
Similarly, Liza Steger expressed delight on being on the Akoka campus of the University. She highlighted some of the resources and opportunities the space would provide to members of the University community, especially students.
Welcoming the visitors to UNILAG, Professor Atsenuwa reiterated the University’s commitment to the project and opportunities it would create. She described UNILAG as a global community and urged the duo to enjoy the sights and sounds of the University.
After the courtesy call, the two guests toured the proposed location of the project and other areas of interest on campus, including the Main Library, UNILAG Confucius Institute, among others.
When completed, the Window on America spot is expected to be a walk-in hub where members of the University community, particularly students, would be able to obtain information about studying in the United States as well as experience the American culture.
