The Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) held a power packed orientation programme for its newly admitted students on Friday, May 31, 2024. The orientation programme aimed to equip new learners with the necessary tools, knowledge, and resources to excel in their academic pursuits.
While delivering her opening remarks, the Director of DLI,Professor Risikat Oladoyin S. Dauda reassured the new intakes of the Institute’s commitment to delivering quality service for their individual and collective advancement. In her words:
“We consider the fact that you have chosen the Distance Learning Institute for your academic pursuit a great honour. We appreciate the confidence you repose in us and we are committed to support you in making your dream a reality.”
Prof. Dauda highlighted the unique ecosystem of teaching and learning in the Institute. She noted that this uniquenesssets itapart from other open distance learning institutes.
She intimated the gathering of the Institute’s adoption of the University of Lagos’ vision of being a Future Readyinstitution. She explained that this means students of the institute will be prepared not only for the challenges of tomorrow but also for the opportunities that lie ahead.
Subsequently, students were introduced to the management of the Institute, course advisers they will engage with in the course of their studies, as well as lecturers and other members of the Institute.
Some of these personnel took turns to enlighten the freshmen on various topics, including:
- Attributes of Successful Distance Learners and Time Management
- Assessment/Examinations, Calculation of GPA/CGPA
- Use of the Distance Learning Portals, Learning Management System (LMS), and Online Interactions
- DLI Library Facilities/Library Accessibilities
- Counselling/AIG/Help Desk
- Use of the University’s Medical Centre
- Security Tips on Campus
- Admission, Students Records, Leave of Absence, Reabsorption, Code of Conduct, Use of Social Media and Rules Guiding Studentship
- Service Charge & Payment Portals
The students also heard from the Dean of the Student Affairs Division popularly known as the “DSA”, Prof. Musa Obalolawho was ably represent by Dr Blessing Ayinkwa. The DSA offered the students words of encouragement, whileemphasizing the University’s commitment to their success. The Dean highlighted the importance of maintaining academic integrity, participating actively in the learning process, and utilizing the available support services.
