The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, has described a Professor of Sociology, Professor Omololu Soyombo as a reputable Academic for his immense contributions to the Academia and the society over the years.
The remark was made during the formal presentation of a book to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, titled ‘State, Insecurity and the African Condition’ (Impediment and Optimum Reconsidered) when he paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor on Thursday, 19th May 2022.
Prof. Soyombo revealed that the book is a fetschrift done in his honour towards his 60th birthday celebration which was celebrated years back. However, for some reasons its final release had dragged on for sometime.
Professor Soyombo who was accompanied by two other faculty members revealed that the purpose of the presentation was hinged on two parts: first, to the person of the Professor Ogundipe and as a Vice Chancellor.
He described Prof. Ogundipe as a Man of many parts and one who has always been a supporter of individuals long before his appointment as Vice Chancellor.
He said the Vice Chancellor’s contribution of a chapter of the fetschrift highlighted an important aspect of Nigeria’s national security where he aptly spoke on the need for Government to embrace forensic science (FS) as a huge route to solving security challenges in the country. The chapter is titled ‘The role of Forensic Science in Security, Investigation and Combating Terrorism in Nigeria’.
In a chapter that exclusively covers basic aspects of forensic science and crime scene safety issues, the Professor of Botany explained in details that FS could be used to analyse biological and chemical attacks that invariably cause mass casualties. He said ‘Terrorism’ act involve fire, arsons and explosion as a result of bombs and other types of firearms. In addition, to these, he revealed that other types of terrorism act include Agro-terrorism, threats to water supplies and the use of high energy radio frequency (HR RF) and use of electromagnetic pulse (EMP).
While, he opined that there’s certainly more to be done to fix the economy, he mentioned that two key important variables in achieving peace would be solely dependent on the successes recorded in both the education and health sectors.
On the importance of the book, the VC commended the team of faculty for the successful completion of what is to be a reference point to National Security and other societal discuss.
