The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS has inaugurated new student leaders who will be at the helm of affairs for the 2023/2024 academic session in the Halls of Residence.
The official Inauguration / Swearing-in Ceremony of newly elected Executive Members of the Halls of Residence was held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, and witnessed by some members of the University Management including the Deputy Vice-Chancellors (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, (Management Services) Professor Lucian O. Chukwu and (Academics and Research) Professor Bola Oboh; Acting Registrar, Mrs. Esther Makinde; and the Director, Quality Assurance and SERVICOM, Professor Oulfemi Saibu.
Also in attendance were staff of the Student Affairs Division, Hall Wardens, Masters and Mistresses Facility Managers as well as the sixty-six (66) student’s representative consisting of 56 females and 10 males.
Organised by the Student Affairs Division at the Tayo Aderinokun Auditorium, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS charged the executives to be law abiding and always show to the world that the university is populated by students who are excellent in character and academic excellence.
While reiterating UNILAG’s commitment to supporting student development initiatives and empowering student leaders to make a meaningful impact on campus life, the university helmswoman encouraged the student leaders to leverage their positions to advocate for student rights, promote diversity and inclusion, and contribute to a vibrant learning environment.
Her words “I congratulate you all for a successful emergence as student’s leaders across the respective faculties. As you assume your roles, you carry with you hopes and aspirations of your peers, and you must be poised to lead by example and make a positive difference in shaping the future of this institution. Let me also state that you must be ready to also negotiate, adopt dialogue with the institution leadership as a proper mechanism to press home demands whenever the need arises in relations to issues bothering on students.”
The Vice-Chancellor further urged them to define their goals very clearly and make good use of their time both in academics and in serving the people.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Dean, Student Affairs Division, Professor Musa Adebayo Obalola, underscored the importance of the occasion.
According to him, the inauguration of new student leaders across UNILAG’s ten (10) Halls of Residence marks a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to nurturing leadership talent and fostering a culture of active student participation.
Professor Obalola then charged the students to be Law abiding and sustain the peace already established on the campus. “You must be able to show leadership with good character and ypur ability to use your God given gift to impact positively will stand you out.”
While delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the entire student’s leadership, the Hall Chairman for Fagunwa Hostel, Miss. Akpovwovwo Prisca Oghenekevwe appreciated the management for the privilege given and the trust reposed in them to serve. She said all the leaders will harness the unity, strength and intellectual prowess of the students force to chart a progressive course for their respective Halls of Residence.
Thereafter, all the new executives took the oath of office which was performed by the Mrs. Risqiat Usman of the University Legal department.
