UNILAG Trains Academic Staff on Implementation of CCMAS

The University of Lagos has continued training for members of its academic staff on the implementation of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) with a train-the-trainer programme.

“What Makes You Shine?”

At the opening ceremony on Monday, October 16, 2023, participants who were drawn from all departments of the university were exposed to the particulars of the CCMAS and ways to use to accentuate the uniqueness of the University of Lagos.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS who was present to declare the training programme open, urged participants to seize the opportunity offered by the training to contribute their quota to the remaking of higher education delivery in Nigeria.

Her words: “What I had long realised is that our curriculum is out of sync with the nation’s demands; hence our seeming irrelevance. If we are to maintain our relevance, we must seize the opportunity that the CCMAS offers us to interact with our stakeholders in the industry and to come up with a curriculum that serves the existential demands of our economy”.

The Vice-Chancellor also challenged the trainees to use CCMAS as a template to produce students who are industry-ready, based on the quality of instruction they receive from the university.

“We must begin to see ourselves as facilitators of knowledge. We must get out of the mother-bird baby-bird syndrome, where we just feed the students. As you sit here today, I want us to break down the barrier between the town and gown. WHAT MAKES YOUN SHINE? Let us use this CCMAS to make our students shine. If you do so, you will shine too”, she said.

Lectures, Presentations, and Interactions

Following the Vice-Chancellor’s address, participants were treated to a series of lectures delivered by senior academics on various sides of the CCMAS.

The Director of Academic Planning, Prof. M.O. Ilori delivered two separate papers on “The State of the CCMAS, Sensitisation & Implementation”, and “Effective Use of Technologies for Teaching CCMAS Courses” while Prof. Fatimah Abdulkareem presentations covered “Implementation of CCMAS: Student-Centered Learning Approcahes” and “Teaching 21st Century Skills and How to Assess them”.

The presentations on “Teaching CCMAS Courses to Large Classes” as well as “Creating a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for Delivery of CCMAS Online: Class Website and Learning Management System” were handledby Prof. Funmi Bammeke, and Prof. M.O.H Amuda, respectively.

The CCMAS implementation training workshop is scheduled to end on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
