UNILAG Staff School Seeks Management’s Support for 60th Anniversary

The University of Lagos Staff School (ULSS) has taken a significant step towards celebrating its 60th anniversary, as members of its Board and Anniversary Local Organising Committee, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the University Management to formally flag off activities for the milestone.

The visit marks the beginning of a series of activities lined up to celebrate six decades of the school’s contributions to quality education and community development.

Leading the delegation was the Chairman of ULSS Board and Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Simeon Adebayo Oladipo, who described the visit as a symbolic move to seek the support and blessings of the University Management as preparations begin.

Professor Oladipo, along with the Headmistress, Mrs. Eunice Akinade and her Deputy, Dr. Esther Sogbamu; explained that the visit also served to formally present the line up of activities for the anniversary celebration.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Foluso Ebun Afolabi Lesi underscored the importance of ULSS to the University community

His words, “UNILAG Staff School has remained a trusted institution where many staff members enroll their wards. The school is as old as the University itself, with a rich legacy that includes the establishment of its annex in Idi-Araba, over four decades ago”.

He further highlighted the school’s unique role as a practical training ground for students in the Faculty of Education, likening it to a teaching hospital for medical students. According to him, the school provides an environment where future educators can develop and refine their teaching skills, which also explains why the Board is traditionally chaired by a Dean from the Faculty of Education.

Commending the Board and the school’s leadership for their dedication over the years, Professor Lesi noted that the institution’s impact is evident in the accomplishments of its alumni. He urged the Board to take pride in the school’s legacy, remain steadfast in advancing its growth and development, sustain its efforts by engaging alumni and other stakeholders, while embracing innovation to keep the school competitive in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

Established on October 10, 1966, the University of Lagos Staff School was created primarily to provide quality primary education for the children of University staff. An annex at Idi-Araba was later opened on January 18, 1983, to serve the children of staff of the College of Medicine (CMUL) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), as well as residents of the surrounding community.

Over the decades, the school has nurtured generations of pupils who have gone on to excel in various fields. Its notable alumni include former Ekiti State Governor, Niyi Adebayo; business leader Femi Otedola; former Senator and UNILAG Council Chairman, Lanre Tejuosho; and renowned music star, Tiwa Savage. Their achievements reflect the enduring legacy of the school in shaping leaders and making a lasting impact on society.
