UNILAG Senate Honours Prof Adegbite as She Retires

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Senate, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, honoured one of its members, Professor Esther Olufunmilayo Adegbite of the Department of Finance, Faculty of Management Sciences as she officially bows out of active University Service on Friday, August 16, 2024.

In her remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayo Atsenuwa, who presided over the Senate Meeting, described Professor Adegbite as “an institution within the University”. She congratulated the retiring Senate-Member for her illustrious service to the University, and contributions to the body of knowledge.

In response, Professor Adegbite who pointed out her position as a Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) quoted Psalm 127: Verse 1 of the Holy Bible. She stressed the need for staff of the University to embrace their roles as destiny shapers. Her words, “…what we are building is more than a house, we are building destinies. We are watching over generations yet unborn. This is a serious assignment. We should be destiny promoters, molding young minds for optimal success.”

Born on August 16, 1954, Professor Adegbite graduated with a First Degree and Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan, in 1976 and 1978 respectively. She won the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) award which led to the commencement of her Ph.D. programme in 1991 and completion in 1994.

Professor Adegbite started her teaching career as an Assistant Lecturer in the University of Lagos in 1982, and grew through the rank to become a Professor in 2010. She has served the University in various capacities including Chairperson of UNILAG Ventures and UNILAG Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee, among others.

Outside the University, She is a Board Member of the Redeemer’s College of Technology and Management (RECTEM) as well as a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers Capacity Building and Certification Committee (CBC).
