
“I am fulfilled and happy that I had the opportunity to work in this institution of higher learning” Those were the words of Professor Ndubisi Nwokoma as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Senate, on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, celebrated him ahead of his retirement from active university service.
With his trademark smile, the renowned Professor of Economics stood tall and agile among other academics in the hallowed Senate Chamber. He expressed gratitude to the University Senate and UNILAG community for career fulfillment, and the opportunity to contribute to research, learning and scholarship.
Earlier in her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS congratulated Professor Nwkoma for his illustrious service to the university, and prayed that God grants him good health, as well as longevity to enjoy the fruits of his labour.


Born on May 12, 1954 in Ukwa-East LGA, Abia State, Professor Ndubisi Nwokoma obtained his his Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1980, 1982 and 1984 respectively.
He joined the services of the University of Lagos in 2001 as a Lecturer 1 in the Department of Economics, and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in October 2010. During the course of his outstanding career at the university, Professor Nwokoma held several positions including Head, Department of Economics between 2012 and 2016, as well as Director, Centre for Economic Policy Analysis and Research, UNILAG, among others.

Outside the University, he has served the National Universities Commission (NUC) as member or Chairman in various accreditation and resource teams, as well as represented the University on the Board of Directors of the Financial Institutions Training Centre, (FITC).
A one-time Special Assistant to the Director General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and Chief of Financing, Industry and Investment at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, (UNECA), Addis Ababa, Professor Nwokoma is a Fellow of the Nigerian Economic Society and member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers of Nigeria and African Econometrics Society.
He has successfully supervised ten (10) Ph.D. graduates, over two hundred (200) Masters Dissertations and numerous undergraduate final year research projects. Professor Nwokoma has over seventy (70) publications in locally and internationally recognised journals.
