UNILAG Senate Celebrates Prof. Atoyebi As He Retires From Service

The University of Lagos Senate, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, honoured Professor of Surgery, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and Consultant Surgeon (Gastroenterology, Endocrinology & Breast), Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, Wole Atoyebi, MB,BS (Honours), FMCS, FWACS, FICS, FACS ahead of his retirement from university service, as he clocks 70 years old on Thursday, November 9, 2023.

In her remarks, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of management, staff, and students, congratulated Professor Atoyebi for his illustrious service to the university, and contributions to the body of knowledge. The Vice-Chancellor prayed that God grants him good health, as well as longevity to enjoy the fruits of his labour.

In his remarks, Professor Atoyebi who joined the meeting via Zoom, expressed gratitude to the University Senate and UNILAG community for the privilege of growth, and career fulfillment.

His words, “Distinguished Senate members, you all served as catalysts of the success of my stewardship and I appreciate you all. I am fulfilled and happy that I had the opportunity to work in this institution of higher learning”.

Born on November 9, 1953, Professor Atoyebi hails from Ile Elemona of Ila-Orangun in Osun State. He enrolled at the University of Lagos for his Preliminary Medical Course in 1972 and began his professional career in 1977; during his internship at the famous Adeoyo Specialist Hospital, Ibadan. He returned to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for his Postgraduate Residency Training from 1980 to 1985.

The untiring medical guru was appointed Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery, LUTH in June 1988 and became a full Consultant Surgeon in 1990. Professor Atoyebi was appointed Lecturer 1 in the Department of Surgery of the College of Medicine, UNILAG in October 1992, Senior Lecturer in 1997, Associate Professor in October 2000, and in October 2005, the UNILAG Governing Council appointed him a full professor on prima facie basis.

He served the University meritoriously in various capacities including Provost, College of Medicine, from 2009 to 2012. He is happily married to a seasoned medical doctor, Dr. Oluwatoyin Olaide Atoyebi nee Odugbemi of Okeigbo in Ondo State, and the union is blessed with children and grandchildren.
