Ahead of the International Conference of the Nigerian Meteorological Society (NiMetS), the Society’s leadership, alongside key stakeholders from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adaptive Land Use (WASCAL), paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos on Monday, March 30, 2026.
The delegation was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Foluso Afolabi Lesi, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, at the 10th Floor Conference Room of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.

The visit was facilitated by the Co-Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Professor Ezechiel Oladapo Longe, who noted that the conference is being jointly hosted by the University of Lagos and the Federal University of Technology, Akure. He explained that the visit was a formal engagement with the host institution in recognition of its critical role in the success of the conference.
Welcoming the delegation, Professor Lesi emphasised the importance of bringing climate-related issues to the forefront, particularly at a time when environmental conditions are becoming increasingly unpredictable.

He described the conference theme, Advancing Meteorology: Harnessing AI, Satellites, and Big Data for Climate Resilience and Sustainability , as both timely and relevant. Referencing a recent storm experienced within the University, he noted that such events underscore the urgency of addressing climate challenges in a more coordinated and informed manner.
Professor Lesi encouraged the organisers to share the outcomes and recommendations from the conference with the University, noting that such insights would be valuable in strengthening the institution’s response to climate and environmental concerns. He also assured the delegation of the University’s full support toward the successful hosting of the four-day conference.
Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Meteorological Society, Professor Debo Adeyewa, who led the delegation, expressed appreciation to the University Management for the warm reception.

He introduced members of the delegation and reiterated their collective commitment to advancing meteorology and addressing climate change through collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Professor Adeyewa, a former Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, also acknowledged the support of the University leadership and members of the Local Organising Committee in preparations for the conference.
The International Conference of the Nigerian Meteorological Society (NiMetS) is scheduled for Monday, March 30, 2026 to Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
