The University of Lagos has, over the years, been changing the narrative of tertiary education through the impartation of practicable knowledge and skills development at all levels of learning.
This, according to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, is in pursuit of the UNILAG 25-year Development Plan which, among other things, harps on Skills Development and Employability for both students and staff.
Prof. Ogundipe made this known on Monday, July 18, 2022 while flagging off a training organized by the Computer Science Academy (C.S.A.) Africa.
The 3-week exercise which is being hosted at the NITHUB, University of Lagos is aimed at empowering young Africans in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with Computing Skills.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, the Vice-Chancellor described the training Africa as another testimony of the University’s commitment to Community Service.
While assuring of the University management’s keen interest in ensuring an enabling environment for skills and innovations to thrive among all its stakeholders, Prof. Ogundipe identified the establishment of the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre as the trailblazer in the University’s move towards grooming UNILAG students, interested staff members and residents of adjourning communities into job creators.
He charged participants at the training exercise to use the opportunity to acquire new knowledge, hone their skills and improve their competences in different areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
In her opening remarks, Founder, Computer Science Academy (C.S.A.) Africa, Dr. Sofiat Olaosebikan said she came about the C.S.A. Africa as a platform to encourage, empower and enable African youths to become real problem solvers thereby giving back to the society.
While inspiring the participants with her humble beginning which she said is in Pure and Applied Mathematics at the University of Ibadan, Dr Olaosebikan who currently lectures at the School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Scotland said her love for Computer Science which predates her undergraduate admission kept her on the grind, she challenged all participants not to lose focus but keep striving and look beyond all limitations.
In his remarks to welcome all participants, Director of NITHUB, UNILAG, Dr Victor Odumuyiwa appreciated the commitment and support of the University’s management towards promoting innovation and technology especially among the students’ population.
Dr. Odumuyiwa noted that the training exercise is another in the series of efforts targeted at grooming participants into problem solvers through Computing Skills.
He harped on consistency among all participants.
The Computer Science Academy (C.S.A.) Africa team from the University of Glasgow had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the management of the University of Lagos during which discussions centred on areas of prospective collaborations and partnerships for institutional growth and development.
