UNILAG Inducts 108 Medical & Dental Graduates…Keynote Speaker Urges Intentionality and Global Impact

The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Idi-Araba has inducted a new set of medical and dental graduates, marking a pivotal moment in their professional journeys. The 2023/2024 graduating class, comprising ninety-one (91) MBBS and seventeen (17) BDS graduates, took the Hippocratic Oath in a ceremony filled with inspiration, ethical admonitions, and calls for transformative leadership in healthcare.

“The ball is now in your court”

Delivering the keynote address, consultant Neurosurgeoun at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, CMUL, Dr. Omotayo Ojo, urged the new doctors to embrace excellence, integrity, and intentional decision-making.

“The university has served you; the foundation has been laid. Now, you must build on it”, he declared.

“Let excellence be your watchword, but pair it with professionalism and integrity. Be intentional – about your internship, service, specialty, settlement, and even who you marry. These choices will shape your destiny.”

While acknowledging the ambition of some to practice abroad, Dr. Ojo encouraged them to “advance professionalism, make Nigeria proud, and bring back rare skills to fuel the growth of modern medicine in the country.”

He emphasized the importance of nurturing networks, avoiding burnt bridges, and daring to redefine possibilities.

“The future belongs to the bold, the doctors who will also be leaders and change makers,” he asserted.

A Privilege, Not a Right
Administering the induction oath, Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Fatima Kyari, reminded the graduates that their journey had only just begun.

“Induction is not enough; you must uphold ethical standards. Your licence to practice is a privilege and not a right” she cautioned.

“There is a disciplinary tribunal for erring doctors. Your licence must not be abused. Remember, a good physician treats diseases, but a great doctor treats the patient.”

She charged them to be compassionate ambassadors of their alma mater, reinforcing the sacred responsibility tied to their profession.

“Fly Higher”

The Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Ademola Oremosu, celebrated the graduates’ resilience through years of rigorous training.

“You have been released to add value to society,” he said. “Fly higher, uphold the college’s legacy, and become institutional ambassadors wherever you go.”

Outstanding candidates, such as Ogunjimi Zainab Aramide (Best Overall Student in MBBS) and Shaba Stephanie Onosekoghene (Best Overall Student in BDS) were honoured for their efforts.

Dignitaries in attendance included Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services) Professor Afolabi Lesi, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS as well as representatives from the University’s Bursary and Library divisions. Former Registrar and Current Director of Office of Advancement, UNILAG, Dr. Folasade Ipaye also graced the occasion.
