The Human Resources Development Centre (HRDC) of the University of Lagos hosted a 4-Day Training programme on ‘Efficient University Council Affairs Management for Council Affairs Officers of Nigeria Universities’.
The 4-day exercise which held between Tuesday, March 1 and Friday, March 4, 2022 according to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, was at aimed improving the capacity of participants in interpreting University policies.
In his remarks while welcoming the participants who were drawn from public and private universities across the country, Prof. Ogundipe who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Academics and Research, Prof. Oluwole Familoni implored them to see the training as a wake-up call to reinvent the wheel of administrative excellence and quality leadership in university administration.
In his opening remarks, the Director/Head, Human Resources Development Centre (HRDC), Dr. Lateef Odekunle, FCA, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the entire University Management for their positive disposition and commitment towards capacity building among the rank and file of the university workforce.
The 4-day training exercise, according to Dr. Odekunle is aimed at bridging the gap between the continually rising number of public institutions and the dwindling number of seasoned and experienced University Administrators especially in some key areas of the governance process.
The training programme had three (3) sessions per day during which various resource persons drawn from the academia, the non-teaching cadre of universities as well as professionals in the public and private sectors took participants through different aspects of governance, policies and several other issues as it all relates to university administration.
At the end of the programme, participants made recommendations/suggestions with a view to charting the course for effective and efficient administration of the 21st century University system.
The recommendations include; training and retraining of Council Affairs Officers as well as Principal Officers of university for continued survival of university systems, training of Council members and proprietors of private Universities as well as proper utilization of social media platforms with a view to gathering feedbacks and public opinions about universities.
Other recommendations include; formation of social media policy by various institutions, security protection programmes for those living in University staff quarters, mandatory toxicology screening for new entrants into universities as well as awareness on institutional loyalty among all staff among others.
Certificates of participation were presented to participants at the end of the programme.
