The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Friday, August 7, 2026, hosted the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Area C Command, Surulere, Lagos, ACP Abayomi Akinpelu Oni, as part of ongoing efforts to deepen strategic collaboration on campus security and community safety.
ACP Oni was accompanied by the newly appointed Divisional Police Officer, Sabo Division and UNILAG alumnus, CSP Isiak Enibisi, and the Station Officer, Area C Command, Mr. Ayo Nworah
The delegation was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Foluso Afolabi Lesi, alongside the University’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. David Omotosho, and other senior security officers.
The visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to review their longstanding partnership, discuss emerging security challenges facing tertiary institutions, and explore practical measures to sustain a safe and enabling environment for teaching, learning, research, and community engagement.
Speaking during the visit, ACP Oni said the purpose was to formally introduce CSP Enibisi, whose division has jurisdiction over the University community.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with UNILAG in safeguarding lives and property, describing the relationship as one built on mutual trust and cooperation over the years.
The ACP commended University Management for its consistent support for security agencies, and stressed that intelligence gathering remains central to effective crime prevention. He added that stronger collaboration among security agencies, tertiary institutions, and neighbouring communities would improve intelligence sharing and coordinated responses to security threats.
He also urged the University to continue sensitising students on responsible civic engagement ahead of forthcoming elections, and emphasised the importance of peaceful participation and respect for the rule of law.
Responding on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, Professor Lesi expressed appreciation to the NPF for its commitment to the security of the University community and for the cordial relationship maintained with the institution.
He said intelligence-led policing, continuous capacity building for security personnel, and strong collaboration with relevant agencies remain central to UNILAG’s security architecture.
Professor Lesi noted that cultism and sexual harassment continue to pose serious threats to the safety and well-being of members of the University community. He stressed that both must be confronted decisively through strict enforcement of institutional regulations, intelligence gathering, and sustained stakeholder collaboration.
He reaffirmed that partisan political activities remain prohibited on campus in line with University regulations. At the same time, he emphasised the need to support eligible students, particularly those aged 18 and above, to exercise their constitutional right to vote peacefully and responsibly.
Professor Lesi also highlighted the role of technology in strengthening campus security. While acknowledging the value of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems in crime prevention, he noted that successful deployment requires reliable power supply, comprehensive databases, skilled technical personnel, and sustainable maintenance frameworks to ensure lasting value.
He further underscored the importance of crime prevention through education, and proposed the introduction of criminology-related academic programmes to broaden students’ understanding of security, justice, and responsible citizenship.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor also advocated a stronger culture of vigilance through the “See Something, Say Something, Sort It” initiative. He explained that prompt reporting of suspicious activities must be matched by a responsive system that ensures action is taken.
Professor Lesi reiterated UNILAG’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders to advance a secure, peaceful, and conducive environment where members of the University community can excel academically, professionally, and socially.
