UNILAG Econs ‘99 Alumni Share Inspiring Stories, Valuable Insights with Students, Honours Staff

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the Faculty of Social Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG) played host to a gathering of the UNILAG Econs ’99 Alumni Association, who shared stories and experiences to inspire current students of the University to reach for the stars and make a difference in the world.

The event tagged Career Talk, Networking & Appreciation, provided a platform for members of the alumni body to share time-tested skills and tips that have proven invaluable, as part of efforts to help students navigate their way to the top, overcome challenges, and achieve success.

Held at the Faculty of Social Science Boardroom II, the hybrid event featured presentations and pep talks by seasoned Customer Experience Expert & Certified Retail Specialist, Mr. Eniola Ositelu; Certified Project Management Expert and top executive, Total Energies, Nigeria, Mr. Bimbo Osifeso; Treasury Manager, Food Concepts (owners of Chicken Republic), Mrs. Ayobami Rabiu; Certified Banker at WEMA Bank, Mr. Anuoluwapo Adefeso and Chairman of the Board, Maersk Nigeria & CFO Maesrsk West & Central Africa, Mr. Michael Adewuyi who spoke virtually.

The interactive session had in attendance the Head, Department of Economics, Professor Simeon Akinleye; Director, Distance Learning Institute, Professor Risikat Dauda; Professor Kemi Lawanson, Course Adviser of the 1999 Economics set, Professor Mary Nwakaeze; Professor Baluga; staff and students of the Economics Department, among others.

Throughout the session, the alumni emphasized the importance of hard work, resilience, and adaptability. They shared stories of their own struggles and triumphs, highlighting the value of perseverance and determination.

The students, who received the alums with great enthusiasm, listened intently and engaged the alumni by asking apt questions to gain valuable insights into the real world, and practical advice on ways to build successful careers, network effectively, and make a positive impact.

Welcoming the alumni body, the Head of Department of Economics, Professor Simeon Akinleye, thanked the set for the initiative and contribution to the Department. He noted that the initiative of the alumni association conformed to the plans of the institution’s current administration to ensure students’ engagement with industry experts.

According to him, “..this event is a testament to the power of alumni engagement and the impact that experienced professionals can have on the lives of students. The University of Lagos and Faculty of Social Science are grateful for the contributions of the Class of 99 alumni and look forward to future collaborations.”

In his address, President of UNILAG Econs ‘99 Alumni Association, Mr. Lekan Aire expressed excitement on the level of enthusiasm displayed by the students. He explained that the gathering aimed to create an avenue to inspire and motivate as well as share knowledge and experiences.

His words, “We have been in your shoes. We have faced similar challenges and overcome them. And today, we stand before you as a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and the support of this great institution. You are the ones who will shape the world we live in tomorrow. And I want to tell you that your journey will not be easy. There will be challenges, obstacles, and setbacks. But it is in those moments that you must draw upon your resilience, your determination, and your passion”.

Disclosing the donation of a printer and air conditioning units to the department, Mr. Aire reiterated his Association’s readiness to give back to the Department of Economics. He added that, “We hope that these resources will enhance your learning experience and provide you with the tools you need to succeed. But our support goes beyond material resources. We are also here to offer our time, our expertise, and our guidance. We want to share our experiences with you, to mentor you, and to inspire you to reach your full potential”.

Similarly, a member of the ‘99 class and academic staff of UNILAG, Dr. Ayodele Shittu, in his remarks, gave a history of how the Alumni class of 99 was formed in 2012 several years after they graduated. He explained that the initiative was a demonstration of the alumni body’s readiness to support the Department in its efforts to churn out top-notch graduates.

His words “what we have done today is to demonstrate our commitment to giving back and paying it forward, paving the way for the next generation of leaders and change-makers”.


The occasion was also a special moment for some staff of the department, as the 1999 set gave them awards of appreciation. Among them was Professor Mary Nwakeze, the set’s Course Adviser, who was described as “amazing” by many of the alumni.
