An Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, University of Lagos, Ọlátúnjí Adéjùmọ̀ made presentations at the UNFOLD Interactive Workshop of the University of Cambridge
The workshop which was held on Thursday, October 27, 2022, was centered on Decolonizing Architectures. A University of Lagos Alumni and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge, Mr. Steven Àjàdí, curated the discourse.
Narrowing his submissions down to the Yoruba space creation and the essence of its cosmology and numerology, Dr. Adejumo advanced the idea that the widely proclaimed “form-follows-function” design dogma cannot serve Africa’s decolonization interest. Instead, he promoted the “form- follow-symbol” design orientation, because symbols hold the mythical values of a people.
According to him, “the process of African space production recovering its identity and architectural pedagogy may be complex but it could be simplified via the overlay of the Ẹ́rìndínlógún principle over colonialism-induced Cartesian/dualism ideas. This will help to realize the aspirations of the Global South to decolonise where we live, work, play and learn.
