UNILAG DLI Trains Facilitators for New PGDE (ODL) Programme

The Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the University of Lagos, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, hosted a one-day training workshop for would-be facilitators of its newly introduced Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Open and Distance Learning) programme. The event, held at the DLI Boardroom, Red Bricks, focused on equipping facilitators with the necessary skills for effective teaching in online learning environments.

With the theme “Enhancing Effective Facilitation in Online Learning Environments,” the workshop aimed to ensure that facilitators were well-prepared to deliver quality education using modern educational technology.

In her welcome remarks, the Director of DLI, Prof. Risikat Dauda, emphasized the importance of the training, stating:

“We are gathered here to break barriers in the delivery of open and distance learning. We must get it right from the start. The university has invested much in creating an enabling environment for us to deliver. It is now up to us to justify that investment with our sterling performance.”

The Coordinator of the PGDE (ODL) programme,Dr. Kehinde Bolarinwa, provided an overview of the training’s objectives, highlighting the facilitators’ role in ensuring effective online instruction. He said:

“The training is to expose you to the educational technological platforms that you will be using to facilitate learning on the PGDE programme. You are the experts in the field, but what we are here to do is to train you on the use of the platforms for disseminating the knowledge of that expertise to our ODL students. As facilitators, you must be conversant with the nuances of the online learning environment and its focus on learner-led interactions, while being in charge of your class. That is one of the objectives of this training.”

The workshop featured five key presentations:

  • Dr. Adeyinka Adewoyin – Course Content Preparation
  • Dr. Adenike Oladipo – Learners’ Engagement
  • Dr. Abosede Ebabhi – Technology, Authentic Assessment, and Platform Efficiency
  • Dr. Olusoji Adewumi  – Effective Course Delivery
  • Dr. Ridwanullah Abdulganiy – Assessment and Grading

Participants at the workshop were drawn from the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) and Faculty of Education, underscoring the University’s commitment to fostering excellence in open and distance learning.

With this training, the University of Lagos takes a major step in ensuring that its PGDE (ODL) programme meets global standards, empowering facilitators to deliver quality education in the digital era.
