UNILAG Computing and Informatics Faculty Holds Orientation Programme for Fresh Students

The Faculty of Computing and Informatics, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in conjunction with the Computer and Informatics Students Association (CISA UNILAG) and in collaboration with the Nigeria Society of Computing Students, organised an orientation programme for newly admitted students on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, at the Design Studio, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences.

The orientation, which focused on academic excellence and successful navigation of university life, provided fresh students with guidance on academic focus, personal development, and professional growth within the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.

In her address, the Acting Head of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, Associate Professor, urged the students to remain focused and disciplined in their academic pursuits.

“There is no royal road to success. Students must establish clear focus and commit themselves to consistent hard work,” she advised.

The Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, Dr. Femi Alamu, encouraged the students to learn from senior colleagues while demonstrating humility and professionalism.

“You must stand on the shoulders of giants to see far, but this must be done politely and without arrogance. Learning from seniors should be approached with humility. Students should also present themselves well, as appearance reflects studentship and professionalism,” he said.

Professor Florence Oladeji of the Department of Computer Science advised the students to use their youthful energy productively and prioritise academics.

“Do not waste time so that time will not waste you. Academics must be your priority. Good grades provide a competitive advantage in the corporate world, and organisations seek graduates with strong academic and professional records,” she noted.

Guest Speaker and sponsor of the event, Mrs. Olajumoke Opaleye, Head of Digital Products at Nigerian Breweries Plc, delivered a lecture titled “Navigating University Life for Success.” She emphasised that success is built on discipline, structure, and self-awareness.

“Success is not accidental; it is built on strong foundations of self-discipline and attitudinal control. Students must go beyond what is taught in class and take ownership of their learning.”

Mrs. Opaleye further stressed the importance of self-discovery, encouraging students to identify their strengths and passions, and highlighted the transformational nature of the university experience in shaping careers and independence.

“Nothing is impossible with tenacity and focus,” she added.

Also speaking, Mrs. Olufunke Udoko, Human Resources Business Partner at Nigerian Breweries Plc, urged students to strive for excellence, noting that top organisations seek brilliant, well-rounded graduates.

“Organisations partner with the best. Be bold, theoretical and practical, and position yourselves for excellence in a demanding global labour market,” she advised.

The event was attended by representatives of Amazon Web Services (AWS), lecturers from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, and a representative of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPRCN), Mr. Odikajor Ebunoluwa.
