UNILAG CHEMIST WINS ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY GRANT

Dr Chinwe S. Alaribe, a Bio and Pharmaceutical Chemist in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, has won a Research Grant from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

The grant, a sum of Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine Pounds, Twenty Eight Pence (£3,999:28) was awarded to her after a successful review of her research proposal titled, “Characterisation of Purified Compounds Isolated from Olax Subscorpioidea and Investigation of their Hedgehog Pathway Inhibitory Activities as Potential Leads in the Treatment of Cancer.”

The grant was awarded to fund research into the characterisation of some potential drug leads in a selected medicinal plant and investigating their potency on cancer cell lines, using GNPS (Global Natural Product Social)–Omics tools.

Dr Alaribe heads a Molecular Networking (MN) research group that uses Global Natural Product Social (GNPS) Networking and Molecular smart tools to elucidate secondary metabolites in Natural and Herbal Products.

Her interests are in the area of Medicinal & Natural Product Chemistry, Quality Analysis of Drugs and Herbal Products.

She leads a research group that is set to utilise analytical, computational and statistical tools to explore new compounds in the green and inexhaustible West African flora.

This is the first of its kind in West Africa,  with the University of Lagos leading the exploration.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, congratulates Dr Alaribe on her achievement.
