UNILAG Celebrates World Intellectual Property Day with Sensitization Campaign

April 26, annually, is recognized as the World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, and the Faculty of Law Intellectual Property Club, University of Lagos marked the 2023 edition of the Day in grand style with a sensitization campaign.

The campaign featured a rally/walk around the University Main Campus in Akoka, and IP sensitization session at the Faculty of Law carpark. It was witnessed by a cross-section of students and staff of the University, as well as dignitaries including the Director General, Nigeria Copyright Commission represented by Lynda Alpheus;  Representative of the Olajide Oyewole Law Firm, Mrs Sandra Oyewole; Director of Creative Commons, Nigeria, Dr. Helen Chuma Okoro, among others.

In a brief address before the rally/walk around the University, the Dean of Faculty of Law, Professor Ige Bolodeoku commended the Club for re-instituting the initiative aimed at providing information on Intellectual Property (IP).

He also thanked the Nigeria Copyright Commission, Creative Commons Organisation, and Olajide Oyewole & Co. for collaborating with the Club to hold the sensitization campaign.

Similarly, the Lead Staff Adviser of the Club, Professor Adejoke Oyewunmi explained that the event, held in collaboration with Nigeria Copyright Commission, Creative Commons Organisation and leading I.P firm, Olajide Oyewole & Co, aimed to raise awareness on the importance of intellectual property, as members of the university community actively engage in research, innovation and creativity.

According to her, this event is an imperative platform to engage and remind the university community of the importance of safeguarding and efficiently managing  Intellectual Property.

The World Intellectual Property (IP) Day serves as an avenue to drive attention to the significance of intellectual property protection, as well as create awareness about copyrights, patents, trademarks and other related issues.

The theme for 2023 World IP Day is: “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”.
