A delegation of the University of Lagos Muslim Community (UMC) led by its Chairman, Professor Abdul-Hakeem Olaniyan, and Chief Imam, Professor Ismail Musa, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, paid a condolence visit to the Arepo, Ogun State residence of the immediate-past Chief Imam of the University and former Dean, Faculty of Education, late Professor Muritala Aderemi Bidmos.
The delegation which included members of the UMC executive team, congregation, and Alasalatu group (women’s wing), offered support and solidarity to the Bidmos family following the demise of the revered community leader and distinguished scholar.







Setting a solemn and reflective tone for the visit, the Resident Imam of the University Mosque, Dr. Abdulraheem Bashir recited a portion of the Quran while Dr. Mustapha Ibrahim led the opening dua.


The UMC representatives also offered heartfelt prayers for Professor Bidmos’ soul, seeking Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and eternal peace for him. They prayed for strength and comfort for his widow, Alhaja Rahamotullah Bidmos and the entire family during this difficult time.

In his remarks, Professor Musa conveyed the condolence of the University community, and reflected on the loss of a man who dedicated his life to guiding others in faith and spiritual growth. While speaking passionately about the exceptional commitment of Professor Bidmos to the University, Professor Musa noted his role in fostering unity, compassion, and faith among students and staff.
The current Chief Imam of the University emphasized the immense impact that Professor Bidmos had on the spiritual and social fabric of the University describing him as a man of wisdom and unwavering dedication. He fondly remembered the icon of Islamic education as a true leader who worked tirelessly for the betterment of others.

A close ally, Professor Muibi Omolayo Opeloye also paid glowing tributes to Prof. Bidmos, describing him as a proactive and determined individual. Opeloye, a visiting Professor at the Department of Religious Studies at the Osun State University, highlighted how Prof. Bidmos’ purposeful living and service to Allah resonated throughout his life and teachings.

In a deeply emotional speech, the Wakeel of Islamic Education Trust (IET), Imam Jubril Oyekan pointed out the importance of preparing for death as a natural part of life.

In the same vein, Alhaja Misah, who spoke on behalf of UMC women’s wing, described the condolence visit as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy left by Professor Bidmos. She pointed out that his leadership and contributions would continue to inspire future generations, and that his memory would remain a source of strength for all who knew him.
During the visit, the eldest son of the late Islamic leader, Professor Mubarak Bidmos who spoke on behalf of the family expressed deep gratitude to the muslim community for the outpour of support. He took the opportunity to announce the establishment of an endowment fund for indigent students at the University of Lagos, a cause close to his father’s heart.

He called for support for the fund, to ensure that his father’s legacy of supporting students in need would continue to thrive.
Professor Mutitala Aderemi Bidmos, who joined the University of Lagos in 1981 as a faculty member in the Department of Arts and Social Science Education: IRS Unit, Faculty of Education became Chief Imam in 1995, a position he held with dignity. His leadership and dedication to his faith and to the University’s growth made him a central figure in the University’s spiritual life. Even after retiring in 2018, his influence endured through his mentorship and philanthropic efforts.

He passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and education that will continue to inspire generations to come.
Professor Muritala Aderemi Bidmos is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
