Timetable and Guidelines for Elections into DLISA-UNILAG Executive Positions

Elections into various executive positions of the Distance Learning Institute Students’ Association (DLISA) of the University of Lagos for the 2023/2024 academic session will hold on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

The electoral timetable and guidelines as issued by Students Affairs Division, UNILAG are indicated below:

7.Saturday, May 25, 2024Presentation of Manifestoes (to end by 6.00pm)
8.Tuesday, May 28, 2024Election by e-voting (9.00am-2.00pm)
9.Wednesday, May 29, 2024Release of Results by DD (APD)
10.Friday, June 7, 2024Swearing-in of elected officers

The general guidelines for the conduct of the elections are as follows:

  1. The Deputy Director shall set up Electoral Committee to facilitate the campaign process and organize the manifesto presentation.
  2. The Deputy Director shall supervise and coordinate the activities of the Electoral Committees.
  3. All candidates will complete the nomination forms online within the stipulated period.
  4. The outgoing DLISA Executive shall submit handover notes and financial reports of their tenure as a precondition for the issuance of the certificate of service.

Eligibility of Candidates:

5. (i) Candidates must have completed one full academic session in the University.

(ii) Candidates must be in good academic standing with a CGPA which must not be less than 3.0.

(iii) Candidates must not have failed any course whether elective or compulsory as at the end of the 2021/2022 academic session.

6. A candidate found guilty of misconduct by the University Management shall be disqualified from running for an elective post even after the election.

7. Any student discovered to have given wrong information will be disqualified and if elected, shall be removed to face a disciplinary panel while the runner-up will be declared the winner.

8. Students who have matriculated in a post-secondary higher institution other than the University of Lagos are not eligible to contest for any position.

9. Complaints arising from the election should be directed to the Dean, Student Affairs (DSA) through the Deputy Director.

(a) The Deputy Director shall submit the list of the Electoral Committee to the Dean of Student Affairs for screening and approval.

(b) The Director Deputy shall supervise and coordinate the activities of the Electoral Committee.

10. There shall be no voting by proxy.

11. No student shall hold two positions in the same academic year at the University of Lagos.

12. The winner of the elections shall be determined by a simple majority of the votes. A re-run shall be conducted within 48 hours when there is a tie.

13. The result of the election shall be duly endorsed by the DSA or his representative; DLI Director; CITS Director; Chief Security Officer (CSO); Sub-Dean/ Deputy Director (APD); and Chairman of Electoral Committee.

14. Election results shall be displayed on the DLI website and made available to all voters.

15. The Deputy Director shall set up an Election Petitions Committee.

16. Where a candidate(s) has/have any complaint against the conduct of the election, such complaint shall be communicated in writing to the Election Petitions Committee for adjudication within 24 hours after the election’s results were released.

17. No candidate shall be deemed to have been duly elected until any petition pending for such an office has been finally disposed of.

18. The Deputy Director has the responsibility of informing the Dean, Student Affairs of any defaulter of the Election Guidelines.

19. The Dean, Student Affairs or his representative shall flag off and close the election on schedule.

20. All year One students are not eligible to contest, (see 5i) and the admission process is still on going.
