Octogenarian steals show at UNILAG Convocation Ceremony

The curtain has fallen on the 60th Anniversary (53rd) Convocation Ceremony celebration of the University of Lagos.

The congregation for the award of Postgraduate diploma, Masters and Ph.D. degrees and gold medals was held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the J. F Ade-Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG.

Out of the 2,251 graduating students, 65 of them received the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.); 2,119 were awarded Master’s degrees and 67 obtained Post Graduate Diplomas (PGD).  

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the award of degrees to two graduating octogenarians. The over 82-year-old Mr. Dayo Michael Duyile, and 82-year-old Mrs. Bridget Obiageli Okonji. The oldest graduating student, Mr. Duyile, was conferred with a Ph.D. in Mass Communication, while Mrs. Obiageli bagged a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counselling.

The overall best Ph.D. Thesis for the year award was won by Yinusa, Ahmed Amoo who obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and also has the best Ph.D. in Science. Kienka, Rita Okorite went away with the best Ph.D. Thesis in Humanities.   

Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Dr. Yinusa Ahmed Amoo was full of thanksgiving to Almighty God for granting him the grace to finish well. He acknowledged that apart from his passion to teach, his Supervisor encouraged him to pursue his doctoral degree in Nigeria following his outstanding performance at both the first and Master’s degree levels.

He spoke about the efforts of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor and other management staff of the university which greatly helped his career.

He thanked the University egg-heads and those who have imparted the graduating class, greatly, for their unrelenting efforts, which culminated in the achievements of their latest feat.

The ceremony also witnessed the award of Gold Medals to two prominent Professors of the University of Lagos who have served meritoriously since they joined the institution. They are Professor Johnson Olaleru, a celebrated Professor of Mathematics and Professor Duro Oni, a Theatre Guru of repute.  

Professor Duro Oni who spoke on behalf of the recipients of the Gold Medals noted that they have benefited immensely from the University. He expressed optimism in the new leadership of the university, adding that it is on the right path to greater success.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor in her address pointed out that the University has in the last sixty (60) years continued to distinguish itself by the excellent calibre of its students, alumni, and staff, as well as its impact on national development.  According to her, the strength of the University of Lagos system and structures built over these years has enabled each Vice Chancellor till date to sustain the visions of the founding fathers while pushing out to find new frontiers in the aspiration to make the institution the best globally.
