Obi House Emerges First at the UNILAG Staff School 2024 Inter-House Sports Competition

It was a moment of joy for Obi (Purple) House pupils as the House emerged winner at the 2024 inter-house sports competition of Nursery – Primary 3 pupils of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Staff School. The event was held on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at the UNILAG Staff School Playing Ground.

The Acting Head Mistress, Mrs. E. A. Akinade in her welcome address, commended parents and invited guests for their presence at the event, despite the early morning rains. She noted that “the competition aimed to foster the spirit of sportsmanship and nurture the talents of pupils. According to her, “The competition would give pupils the opportunity to bond and make friends outside the classroom”.

Mrs. Akinade also expressed gratitude to the University Management team led by Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the UNILAG Staff School Board led by Professor Adebayo Oladipupo and School’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) led by Dr. Folorunso Adebayo.

In his speech, the Chairman of the Day, Engineer Tony Ezeukwu pointed that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. His words, “although, the major focus of schooling is for academic purpose but we cannot neglect that for a child to be able to grasp what he or she is being taught, it requires the child to be excellent in the physical aspect. Also, the inter-house sport can be seen as classic because not only is it good  for the general physical wellbeing of the children, sports also help instill a winning and team work spirit, it help discipline the children, it gives them an higher level of concentration, to be more responsible and dedicated to whatever they have been assigned”.

Also speaking at the event, Engineer Leye Agiri who represented the 1975 Alumni set of the school commended the school for producing great people who are now in high places, both locally and internationally.

A run down of various activities at the competition indicate that:

  1. In Match Pass, Jaja (Green) House came first, Oduduwa (Blue) House came second while Obi (Purple) House came third.
  2. In race competition, Obi House came first, Oduduwa (Blue) House came second while Jaja (Green) came third.

The Inter-House Sports Competition was witnessed by representatives of 1972 Alumni set, Pastor Remi Morgan; Principal of International School, UNILAG, lagos, Mr. Kolawole Olutayo Amusan, pupils of Oluwole Primary School, among others.
