The National Association of Nigerian Visually Impaired Students (NANVIS), University of Lagos Chapter has hosted its newly admitted members, Freshmen at the University of Lagos, to an Orientation Programme.
At the event, about 30 visually impaired freshmen were introduced to a myriad of programmes and support systems that are available in the university, and tailored to their needs.
The primary objective of the orientation was multifaceted, intending to inform and familiarize the newly admitted students with the operational framework and activities of the association. Emphasizing inclusivity, the programmed aimed to dispel misconceptions regarding the capabilities of visually impaired individuals, focusing instead on nurturing a conducive academic and social environment.
Integral to the success of the event were distinguished speakers including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Oguntola, OON, FAS, who is a stalwart supporter of the association. She was represented by the University Librarian, Prof Yetunde Zaid, who imparted valuable insights to the students on ways to achieve academic excellence through effective use of library resources.
Among other notable attendees was the Library Staff Technician overseeing the Visually Impaired Resource Center (VIRC), Ejike Simon Obodoma. He offered practical advice on leveraging association-sponsored capacity-building initiatives for academic and social triumphs.
The presence of accomplished individuals like Olalekan Ibrahim, a visually impaired alumnus who was one of the best graduating students of his Department for 2021/2022 academic session, further inspired the freshers.
Expressing gratitude, President of NANVIS, Felix Ayantope Areo, and the executive members extended heartfelt appreciation to all attendees for their unwavering support.
