The University of Lagos (UNILAG), known for its vibrant campus life and diverse student body, hosted the second edition of Mr and Miss UNILAG pageantry, themed: “Eyes on the Future: Beauty and Brains.”
The grand event, which took place in the University’s indoor sports hall, left attendees mesmerized by a night filled with glitz, glamour, and exceptional talent. It was indeed a dazzling showcase of creativity and entertainment that featured live performances from notable music artistes, and freestyle performances from aspiring ones. The evening was a testament to the immense talent and vibrant spirit of the university’s students.
The organisers of the event, Students’ Affairs Division of the university in collaboration with the Station Manager, UNILAG Radio 103.1FM, Mr Michael Dimeji-Lamu, went above and beyond to ensure that the event was graced by reigning kings and queens of different categories of pageants across the country, one of them being the current Mrs Nigeria, Rei Obaigbo, who was also one of the judges.
Embodying the theme “Eyes on the Future: Beauty and Brains,” this year’s Mr and Miss UNILAG pageant highlighted the multifaceted qualities of the contestants, emphasizing not only their physical appearance but also their intellectual prowess and vision for the future. Participants were encouraged to demonstrate their dedication to personal growth, academic excellence, and making a positive impact on society.
The event kicked off with a welcome remark by the representative of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lucian O. Chukwu, who is also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services). Professor Chukwu was accompanied on stage by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Musa A. Obalola and other notable members of the university community.
A series of electrifying performances by renowned music artistes such as Harry Song, KCEE, DJ Neptune, Spyro, among others, captivated the audience at different points in the evening.
The contestants, elegantly dressed in stunning outfits, took the stage, introducing themselves with grace and confidence. Each participant brought their own flair and individuality, reflecting the diversity of the university’s student body. The judging panel, comprising esteemed members of staff of UNILAG as well as industry professionals, faced the challenging task of selecting winners from a pool of exceptional candidates who epitomized the theme’s vision of beauty, intelligence, and future-oriented mindset.
As the night drew to a close, the much-anticipated crowning of Mr and Miss UNILAG took place. The winners, Inioluwa Oderinde, a 200Level student of Economics who was crowned Mr UNILAG and Jecintha Oguejofor, a 200Level student of Mathematics who was crowned Miss UNILAG, were chosen, out of 19 male contestants and 29 female contestants, for their exceptional qualities and personification of the university’s values.
They were recognised not only for their physical appearance but also for their intellect, leadership, and commitment to positively impacting the campus and beyond. This earned them resounding applause and cheers from their fellow students and other guests at the venue.
The Mr and Miss UNILAG pageant provides a platform for students to showcase their unique personalities, skills, and aspirations while fostering a sense of camaraderie and unity within the campus community. It transcends the boundaries of a traditional beauty contest; it serves as a celebration of the university’s vibrant student community and its commitment to nurturing talent in all its forms. This event reinforces the importance of self-expression, creativity, and unity within the campus environment, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
The success of this year’s event, filled with captivating performances, a vibrant atmosphere, and the acknowledgement of exceptional individuals, solidifies the Mr and Miss UNILAG pageant as a cherished tradition at University of Lagos. It will continue to inspire students to cultivate their intellect, embrace their talents, and shine brightly in all their endeavours.
