SUMMARY OF CAREER CONVERSATIONS 8.0

On Wednesday, May 8, 2024 the Office of Career Development Services (UNILAG-OCDS) hosted the Head of Development at Bazara Technologies Inc., Mr. Bayo Puddicombe, on its Career Conversation Series. It was the 8th in the series for the 2023/2024 Academic Session.

During the programme, which lasted for 1hr 30 mins, Mr. Bayo Puddicombe admonished the participants on the “real value of work.” He explained to the participant why they must learn to focus on excellence in the delivery of any task before them right from now that they are students of the University of Lagos. He explained to them that no individual can ever pay them a reward that is commensurate with their work effort. Yet, they must be willing to go the extra mile for this is where the experience and lessons needed to build a fulfilling career path are hidden.

Next, he shared his story with the student. He started with his student journey in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos and how he was able to develop the culture of innovation as a student leader. Little did he know that he was actually preparing himself for the world of work and entrepreneurship simultaneously. Thus, he advised the participants to embrace the habit of teaching themselves productively, taking up responsibilities in their respective Departments and Faculty at large, taking risk by nominating themselves and then others for assigned responsibilities in the classrooms, and among students’ associations on campus. He also advised that they must develop a can-do attitude towards exploring opportunities around them within and outside of the University campus.

Furthermore, Mr. Puddicombe advised the participants to strive for excellence. In this regard, he defined software as “a way of building solutions that can work anywhere in the world” contextualizing this, he explained to the participants why the crave for innovative solutions is an important step to discovering one’s dream career. Students should not shy away from problems and challenges that have pervaded our society till date. In his words, “when you leverage these problems and challenges, you become better at proffering innovative solutions.” In other words, being a solution-oriented person is the reason why a potential employer will approach you for employment after school. Thus, he advised the participants never to be tired of creating products or services that matches the pain-points of students and staff of the University of Lagos and the society at large.

Finally, he summarized his lesson in four key bullet points as follows: To better discover your career dreams as a student of the University of Lagos,

  • Take solace in exploring and exploiting available learning opportunities within and outside of the four walls of the University of Lagos
  • Cultivate the habit of building trust
  • Be intentional at building reputations
  • Focus on delivering values both on campus and outside of the University community
  • Create good impression of yourself.

Mr. Bayo is a Software Architect who has a desire to see technology leveraged properly across Africa as a tool for accelerated development. His career path has spanned several segments in the technology industry. And this journey has taken him from Network administrator, to Technology Advisory consultant and finally Software Engineer.
