Inauguration of the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit at the CMUL

The University of Lagos Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit, on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, inaugurated an extension of the Unit at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba.

Before the commencement of the event, the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit as well as members of the University Management paid a courtesy visit to the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. David Oke.

In her opening remarks, the Director, Quality Assurance & SERVICOM, Professor Grace Otinwa, expressed delight at the Inauguration and commissioning of the Unit at the College of Medicine, UNILAG, Idi-Araba.

According to her, the goals and objectives of the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM is entrenched in the overall mission of the University of Lagos.

She stated that the SERVICOM Committee in CMUL is to operate service charter, service improvement plans for excellence and raise the level of customer satisfaction. The unit is to also monitor and report progress and performance using SERVICOM index. It is equally expected to carry out surveys of services and customer satisfaction as well as recognize hardworking staff and students of the College of Medicine.

Prof. Otinwa encouraged the coordinator and members of the Unit to embark on sensitization of the existence of the Unit in the College of Medicine.

In his opening remarks, the Provost, Prof. Oke, expressed his pleasure at the inauguration of the Unit at the college and assured that the tenets of quality assurance and SERVICOM would be embedded into the day-to-day operations of the College. He also pledged the support of the College of Medicine management to the newly-established unit.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, in his address, applauded the setting up of a Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit at the College, especially with the new normal in the University, which is the use of blended formats in teaching and various activities. He stressed the need to keep and maintain the University’s standard of teaching, research and conduct of academic and non-teaching staff.

Prof. Ogundipe encouraged everyone present to ask students to assess them, expressing their independent opinions. He also encouraged Deans and Heads of Department to ask individuals to assess them, allowing them “to be mirrors”, so they can become better as people and as leaders.

During the official inauguration of the Unit, the Provost presented the reflective jacket and decorated the Vice-Chancellor, while the Vice-Chancellor did the same for the Provost. Outstanding members of the Unit at the University level were also decorated and presented with awards. The Vice-Chancellor presented the SERVICOM poster to the Provost.

The Director, Quality Assurance and SERVICOM remarked the Vice-Chancellor as an excellent driver of the University and thus he was presented with an award of excellence.

The establishment of the Unit was conceived under the tenure of the immediate past Provost, Prof. Afolabi Lesi and birthed under the leadership of Prof. David Oke.

In order to achieve the goals of the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit, the newly established unit is expected to:

  • To deploy quality assurance mechanisms
  • Improve the quality and standard of teaching, scholarship, research and service to the College
  • The Committee is to commence and sustain the culture of monitoring and evaluating courses taught, examinations, conflict resolutions, and resolution of complaints by staff and students.
