The Medical Centre, University of Lagos wishes to inform members of the University community of the current Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria.
Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness that can lead to severe complications if not addressed promptly.
Key Information:
- Symptoms: Fever, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, and general weakness are common early symptoms. In severe cases, patients may experience bleeding, organ failure, and, in some instances, death.
- Transmission: Lassa fever is primarily transmitted through contact with the urine or feces of infected rats, as well as through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals.
- Precautionary Measures:
- Personal Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use hand sanitizers if soap is unavailable
- Food Storage: Store food in rodent-proof containers and maintain cleanliness in eating areas
Avoid Contact: Minimize contact with rodents and their excretions - Protective Gear: Use protective equipment, such as gloves and masks, when caring for the sick.
- University Precautions:
- Awareness: Information and educational materials will be distributed across campus. Play your part by sharing this with your friends and colleagues.
- Medical Services: Promptly seek medical attention if you experience symptoms or have been in contact with a confirmed case.
- Sanitisation: Enhanced cleaning and sanitisation measures will be implemented in common areas. Also ensure you sanitise your hands and personal surroundings regularly.
All members of the University of Lagos community are enjoined to adhere strictly to these precautions. By doing so, we can collectively contribute to preventing the spread of Lassa fever and ensuring the well-being of our community.
