ICSW 2023: UNILAG Reiterates Commitment to Top-notch Service Delivery, Awards Outstanding Staffs and Units

The significance of collaboration and teamwork in delivering outstanding customer experiences formed the core of discussions as activities marking this year’s International Customer Service Week at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) came to an end at a Stakeholders Forum on Thursday, October 5, 2023.   

Themed ‘’Team Service’’, the hybrid event which was held at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall of the institution provided a platform for professionals from various industries to share insights on customer service best practices, strategies for enhancing customer satisfaction, and innovative approaches to delivering exceptional customer experiences.

Dignitaries present at the forum included Director (Internal Audit), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) who represented the Director General of NIMASA, Mrs. Olamide A. Odusanya; Special Guest of Honour and Chairman/NUC Noda Officer for Servicom, Mr. Iliyasu Musa; former Registrar and Director, Arthur Mbanefo Digital Resource Center, Dr. Taiwo T. Ipaye, FNIM; Deans of Faculties of Engineering and Social Sciences, Professor Obanishola Sadiq and Laja Odukoya as well as pioneer Director and immediate past Director of UNILAG Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit, Professor Solomon Okunnuga and Professor Grace O. Otinwa among others. 

The highlight of the event was the awards ceremony to recognize and appreciate the efforts of outstanding staff members, units/departments within the university, and companies that have consistently demonstrated exceptional commitment to providing excellent customer service. In addition to the awards ceremony, the forum also featured engaging sessions led by renowned industry experts who shared their knowledge and expertise on topics such as customer relationship management, effective communication skills, complaint-handling techniques, and building customer loyalty.

Panelists at the sessions included Film/Television Producer and Director, Deola Osunkojo; Deputy Registrar, UNILAG Staff Training and Development, Mrs. Aderonke Asiwaju; Vice-President, Association of Vendors on Campus and CEO Mavis Foods and Confectionaries, Mr. Adeola Asunmo and Chief Accountant (Treasury), UNILAG, Mrs. Adebimbe M. Oroleke.  These experts provided valuable insights and practical tips that attendees could apply in their respective roles to improve customer service standards.

While welcoming participants to the event, the Director of Quality Assurance and Servicom, Professor Olufemi Saibu, opined that the International Customer Service Week (ICSW) is not just about customers but a celebration of those who provide the services.

According to the astute Professor of Economics, ICSW offers an opportunity for every stakeholder to reflect on the power of collaboration and recognize the contributions of each team member in delivering outstanding customer experiences.

Professor Saibu revealed that the winners of the awards were selected through a rigorous evaluation process that considered factors such as customer feedback, performance metrics, innovation in service delivery, and overall impact on customer satisfaction. His words, “The recognition bestowed upon these individuals and departments serves as a testament to their dedication and hard work in ensuring that customers receive the highest level of service”.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, through her representative, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu noted that the ICSW theme aligns with the vision and agenda of the University to be a future-ready institution driven by team spirit to deliver quality service. 

He underscored the importance of a dedicated workforce, and the university’s commitment to improve on its service delivery.
