FONA’25: UNILAG VC Re-affirms Role as Hub for Nigeria’s Artistic Renaissance

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, has re-affirmed the institution’s commitment to being the hub of Nigeria’s artistic revival.

She made this declaration on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, during the second day of the Festival of Nigerian Arts (FONA’25), an event organized by the Faculty of Arts Students’ Association (FASA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Themed: Bridging the Gap, One Voice, Equal Future, the event had a line-up of notable guests, including members of the University’s management team, led by Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS; Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Mudashiru Ilupeju; Special Assistant and Special Adviser to the President on Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Mr. Ayomide Adeagbo, and Mrs. Moriam Ajala amongst others.

Professor Ogunsola outlined the University’s strategic vision to foster creativity and innovation and drive a national resurgence through the arts. 

She also highlighted the institution’s ongoing initiatives to promote gender equality, youth development, awareness against abuse, and women’s empowerment, which are all key subjects at the heart of FONA ’25.

A Confluence of Creativity and Inspiration

Held at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall, FONA’25 featured empowerment talks, panel discussions, and orientation on opportunities in the arts, which captivated participants from tertiary institutions across the Lagos, including the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka; St. Augustine College of Education, Akoka; Yaba College of Technology; and Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

Attendees were treated to an engaging mix of cultural performances and pep talks on self-discovery, cultural pride, and the role of the arts in fostering an equitable future.  

In his address at the event, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, UNILAG, Professor Mudashiru Ilupeju, urged participants to harness their talents and authenticity with his rallying call on the topic: Discover Yourself and Let the University Discover You.

His inspiring address, which struck a powerful chord among the students, highlighted the potential of the arts to transform lives and re-define the future of Nigeria’s youth.

Other speakers, including Head, Education West Africa for British Embassy, Mr. Daniel Emenahor, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Students Unionism, Hon. Kappo Samuel Olawale, CEO Shoppers Warehouse, Mr. Oyinye Jay Ejide, representing various sectors of society, enriched the conversation, exploring how the creative arts can bridge societal divides and promote inclusivity. Their insights encouraged students to harness their artistic talents to confront modern challenges and become agents of change.

Drawing from their diverse experiences and areas of expertise, they highlighted how creativity can serve as a unifying force capable of transcending cultural, economic, and social barriers.

Awards and Cultural Showcase

A special highlight of the day was the breathtaking cultural piece performed by students of the Faculty of Arts. The performance showcased the iconic Eyo Festival, a traditional Yoruba masquerade celebration rooted in the cultural heritage of Lagos. 

Through vibrant processions, elaborate costumes, and compelling storytelling, the students brought to life the significance of the festival as both a ceremonial tribute to the Oba of Lagos and a symbol of unity for Lagosians.

There was also the presentation of awards to dignitaries in recognition of their contributions to the arts and cultural development. Honourees included Professor Ogunsola and other distinguished guests who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and support for creative initiatives.

The week-long FONA ’25, which commenced on Monday, May 26, 2025, began with the Arts Word War – an inter-departmental competition featuring Quiz, Debate, Spoken Word, and Spelling Bee events. The festival will culminate on Friday, May 30, 2025, after a week of rich engagement, creativity, and cultural exchange.
