As part of efforts to maintain a safe environment, prevent/mitigate the risk of fire-related incidents, as well as protect lives and property on the three campuses of the University of Lagos, all members of the University Community and other stakeholders are hereby enjoined to abide by the Fire Safety Regulations and Guidelines as indicated below:
- General Provisions
1.1. These regulations apply to all staff members of the University of Lagos and are designed to promote a safe working environment for everyone on campus.
1.2. Compliance with these regulations is mandatory for all staff members, regardless of their role or position within the University.
2. Responsibilities
2.1. As a staff of the University of Lagos, you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with fire safety procedures and actively contributing to fire prevention efforts.
2.2. It is your responsibility to report any fire hazards or safety concerns to the appropriate authorities promptly.
3. Fire Prevention Measures
3.1. Smoking is strictly prohibited within university buildings, including offices, laboratories, and common areas. Designated smoking areas are provided outside the buildings.
3.2. Electrical appliances should be used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and guidelines. Avoid overloading electrical outlets and promptly report any damaged equipment to facilities management.
3.3. Flammable materials must be stored and handled in designated areas following established safety protocols. Chemicals should be stored in appropriate containers and cabinets.
4. Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
4.1. Familiarize yourself with the location of fire alarm pull stations, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits in your area of work.
4.2. If you discover a fire or hear a fire alarm, evacuate the building immediately using the nearest exit route.
5. Emergency Evacuation Procedures
5.1. During a fire emergency, do not use elevators. Use the stairs to evacuate the building and assist others who may need help.
5.2. Once outside, proceed to the designated assembly point and remain there until instructed otherwise by emergency personnel.
6. Firefighting Equipment and Procedures
6.1. Fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment are provided throughout university buildings. Only use fire extinguishers if you have received proper training and it is safe to do so.
6.2. If you are unable to extinguish the fire safely, evacuate the area immediately and notify emergency services.
7. Training and Education
7.1. The University provides fire safety training sessions for all staff members to raise awareness and promote a culture of safety.
7.2. Attend scheduled training sessions and actively participate to enhance your understanding of fire safety procedures and protocols.
8. Enforcement and Penalties
8.1. Violation of the fire safety regulations may result in disciplinary action, including fines or other appropriate measures, in accordance with university policies.
9. Review and Revision
9.1. These regulations will be reviewed periodically to ensure their effectiveness and relevance to evolving needs and circumstances.
