The Department of Economics, University of Lagos is set to host the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Miss Gita Gopinath on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at 2.30 p.m. at the Faculty of Social Sciences lecture Theatre (FSSLT), UNILAG, Akoka.

Miss Gita Gopinath assumed the role of First Deputy Managing Director of IMF on January 21, 2022. She had previously served as the Chief Economist of the Fund from 2019 to 2022. Her current brief includes supervising the work of staff; representing the Fund at multilateral forums; maintaining high-level contacts with member governments and board members, the media, and other institutions, leading the Fund’s work on surveillance and related policies; as well as overseeing research and flagship publications.
Prior to joining IMF, Ms. Gopinath was Assistant Professor of Economics at the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago (2001- 2005), and the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at the Economics Department of Harvard University (2005- 2022). She has authored numerous research articles on exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt, and emerging market crises. Her research, which focuses on International Finance and Macroeconomics, is widely cited and has been published in many top economics journals.
