Commendations for Prof Agomo at Public Presentation of Essays

It was a red-letter day for Professor Chioma Agomo as the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos rolled out the drums to celebrate and eternalize her even after her retirement two years ago.

All roads led to the Ignatius Ayua Lecture Theatre, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), University of Lagos, where a book titled “Rethinking Commercial and Industrial Law in Nigeria” was unveiled in honor and acknowledgment of Professor Chioma Agomo as an intellectual giant.

The Public Presentation of the essays was graced by the crème de la crème from within and beyond the Faculty of Law as well as the legal profession who collectively showered encomiums on Professor Chioma Agomo adjudging her a teacher, mentor and exemplary leader of repute.

In her remarks, Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, congratulated Prof. Chioma Agomo for what she called a fulfilling career while in the service of the university.

Prof. Ogunsola who graced the event alongside Deputy Vice-Chancellors for Development Services,Prof Ayodele Atsenuwa and Management Services, Prof. Lucian Obinna-Chukwu, paid glowing tributes to Prof. Agomo for being an epitome of strength, integrity, courage, character and forthrightness during the crisis which rocked UNILAG between 2020 and 2021.

In his remarks, President, National Industrial Court, Justice Benedict Kanyip said the Industrial Court identifies with Prof. Agomo in acknowledgment of her intellectual contributions.

Represented by Justice Elizabeth Ama Oji, the NIC President gave kudos to the retired Professor of Commercial and Industrial law for successfully engraving her name in gold on the sands of time in the legal profession.

Other speakers at the well-attended ceremony were the Dean, Faculty of Law, Professor Ige Bolodeoku; Chairman of the ceremony, Professor Fidelis Oditah, SAN; Head, Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Prof. Adejoke Adewunmi among others. They all appreciated Prof. Agomo for her astuteness, mentorship, counsel and exemplary qualities.

The 456-paged book titled “Rethinking Commercial and Industrial Law in Nigeria” according to the Reviewer, Professor Animi Awah, is divided into 20 chapters, covering traditional and contemporary topics in Commercial and Industrial law.

Highpoint was the formal unveiling of the book by the Chairman of the occasion, Professor Fidelis Oditah, SAN.

In her response, Prof Chioma Agomo was full of gratitude to the entire gathering for the honor, love and support, even after two years of her retirement from active service to UNILAG. She hailed the rank and file of the Faculty of Law for the culture of excellence and charged all staff to see their positions as a trust from God.

Born in 1951, Professor Chioma Agomo had her early education in Abia state, and moved to London in 1967 where she had her secondary and tertiary education. She returned to Nigeria in 1980 for her National Youth Service in the University of Lagos.

On completion of her service year in 1981, Prof. Agomo was recruited into the Faculty of Law where she rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Commercial and Industrial Law in 2001. She served the university in various capacities till she retired in 2021.

Professor Chioma Agomo currently works at Anchor University, Lagos where she is the Dean, Faculty of Law.
