Renowned Professor of Arts History at the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Adepeju Layiwola, is set to host an exhibition and fashion show tagged: Body, Blue and Beyond on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
The Opening Ceremony of the exhibition is slated for 3 p.m. at the Thought Pyramid Art Centre while the Fashion Show will hold at 4 p.m. at the Mydrim Gallery, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Body, Blue and Beyond is built onProfessor Layiwola’s previous solo exhibition, Indigo Reimagined (2019), which explored the historical references to sartorial traditions and textile production processes in Southwest Nigeria.
The new iteration places the body as a canvas for adornment. ‘Body Blue’ is a metaphor for dismantling colonial structures. It also symbolizes the tearing of mass-produced copies of indigenous àdìre textiles flooding the local markets in Nigeria.
The Exhibitor, Professor Adepeju Layiwola, is a renowned artist with several feathers to her hat:
- She is the first female President-elect and Vice President of African ancestry of the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA), USA.
- She initiated the making of the iconic wall mural on the façade of the Creative Arts building at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
- She initiated the annual Omooba Yemisi Shylon-sponsored UNILAG/OYASAF Art Entrepreneurship Workshop (2011 – 2014) at the Creative Arts Department, UNILAG.
- She has served as Guest Speaker at Art X, West Africa’s premier international art fair, designed to showcase the best and most innovative contemporary art from the African continent and its Diaspora.
Members of the university community and general public are cordially invited to attend.
